About Luray and Page County

Page County sits in one of the most scenic stretches of the Shenandoah Valley, tucked between the Blue Ridge to the east and Massanutten Mountain to the west. The Shenandoah River runs through its heart, and Luray Caverns — one of the most visited attractions in the mid-Atlantic — anchors a robust tourism economy that has welcomed visitors for over a century.

Unlike some parts of the valley, Luray and Page County have a genuine vacation infrastructure. Hotels, restaurants, outfitters, wineries, and hundreds of short-term rental properties exist in a community that actively welcomes visitors. This is a place designed, at least in significant part, for tourism.

Short-term rentals are common and generally accepted throughout the county. Properties range from modest river cabins sleeping four to large mountain retreats sleeping twelve or more. The market is competitive and well-reviewed, with experienced hosts who understand the expectations of vacation guests.

What to Expect

Most properties in the Luray area offer genuine mountain and river character — these aren't suburban houses dressed up with a fire pit. Expect log construction, stone fireplaces, wraparound decks, and river or ridge views. The best properties book quickly, especially in fall foliage season (mid-October), summer weekends, and holiday periods.

Page County roads vary significantly. Properties close to town are easily accessible year-round. Mountain properties may require four-wheel drive in winter or after heavy rain. Read listing access notes carefully before booking a remote property.

Virginia STR Regulations

Page County has its own short-term rental regulations. Operators are required to register with the county and comply with applicable health and safety standards. When booking, verify that your host is operating a permitted, compliant property. Maximum overnight occupancy on private septic systems is two guests per bedroom as determined by county real estate records — not simply whatever the listing advertises.
